“Marijuana activist Marc Emery is accusing the NDP of breaking an informal deal aimed at bringing Marijuana Party supports into the NDP fold. A Vancouver area candidate was forced to resign this week after an online video of him surfaced showing him apparently smoking pot with Marc Emery. Emery says he’s shocked at the hypocrisy of a party that advocates the decriminalization of marijuana, yet forces those linked to the drug to resign. The NDP denies any such deal and says Emery’s claim is pure fantasy.” -CP24

NDP leader Jack Layton denies that he had a deal with Marc Emery’s BC Marijuana Party to join forces, but he’s on video saying that he supports ending penalties for having, growing or selling marijuana: www.youtube.com On September 20, 2008, his spokesperson Brad Lavigne told the Canadian Press: “Lavigne acknowledged the NDP has long advocated, and continues to advocate, decriminalization of simple possession of small amounts of marijuana, but said that does not extend to trafficking or grow ops.” Talk about a confusing message. Repeal of possession laws, while leaving cultivation and trafficking laws in place, only helps organized crime.
